Parkland Petals - 2006 An interactive artwork for an aged care facility in Townsville
The decision to place our aging parents and relatives into high care nursing facilities is usually a difficult one. Visiting them can be traumatic especially if the family member is distressed and or bored from lack of intellectual stimulation. Parklands Nursing Home recognised this problem and approached JCU to create an artwork that would be more than an image. Dr. Linda Ashton designed a wheelchair height interactive floral puzzle with interchangeable parts and special storage cupboard. Mirror panels were added as most elderly people have few opportunities to see their own faces and expressions. Two ornamental budgies sit atop the storage cupboard for stroking. Elderly people miss their pets' company once living in institutional health care settings. Magnetic raindrops were incorporated and essential oils soaked into the timber flowers for olfactory stimulation. Education students constructed the work which is installed in a busy corridor at the nursing home facility. Visiting grandchildren also enjoy playing with the puzzle.
